Conquering the "Skin Freakout"

One of the questions I seem to be asked most these days is what moisturizer to use when your skin is having a complete and utter celebrity-rehab-style meltdown. From redness to breakouts to rough patches to oiliness to clogged pores, it all seems to happen at once!

Skin "freakouts" often happen to me during periods of stress or when there's a big change in the weather. Usually when this happens I just leave my face alone as much as possible and try not to crap it up with a lot of products while it normalizes itself (ie, stay away from anything with acids in it!). But now that it's winter, one still needs to moisturize - and oftentimes, my regular products just make the problem even worse.

However, I've discovered two fab moisturizers that always help my skin get back to normal, while keeping it hydrated in the process:

Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Plantidote Mega-Mushroom Face Cream is a product I've posted about before, for the very same reason. It claims to use mushrooms to help quiet and calm skin, and while I can't verify the science behind that, I CAN tell you that this product really, really works. I even use it to help calm my skin after reactions to other skincare products.

Clinique Moisture Surge Extra is gel-based and oil-free. It's light and fast-absorbing, but still keeps skin incredibly hydrated. I've never experienced any irritation with this, even when my face is having a tantrum.

Clinique also has a new Redness Solutions line that might be good for situations like this, but I haven't tried it yet. Have you? Let us know in the comments, or, just post your favorite temperamental skin solutions!
