Workin' On Our Night Moves

Nightlife, my friends, is cyclical (check out this great article about it by Jim Holt here). One year, huge dance clubs are the place to be, the year after that, it's all about dive bars, which then give way to lounges. Back in my college days at NYU, big clubs ruled the New York nightlife scene. We'd get all dressed up, wait in line in the freezing cold outside Exit, Twilo, or China Club, pay a hideous $30 cover charge, and dance the night away accompanied by weak drinks and sweaty people.

These nights were not complete without a thorough dusting of body shimmer. My favorite was by Urban Decay. Their original line of flavored body shimmers was wonderful...Red Hot...Marshmallow...Cake...you could just fluff some on before a night out, endowing you with a layer of subtle shimmer and a yummy, food-y fragrance that was delicious without being overpowering. They came especially in handy when sweating it out on the dancefloor, which would bring out more of the shimmer and the scent.

I passed by the Urban Decay display at Sephora recently, and noticed some new shimmering wares. Though my big-box mega-club days are over, I decided to sample these new goodies. The new collection is built around cocktails - there's a body balm, a lip gloss, and of course the flavored body powder, in enticing scents of Pina Colada, Cosmopolitan, and Mai Tai.

However, upon first whiff I was overcome with a syrupy sweetness that would send a small child to the moon. Mai Tai reminded me of childrens' cough syrup, and sent my nasal passages into such a shock that I was unable to properly evaluate the other two.

I want to write a letter to the company and implore them to bring back Red Hot and Cake. What ever happened to the oldies-but-goodies? Then again, maybe makeup, like nightlife, is cyclical. I'll just be waiting here until my old favorites come back around.
