Everybody in the Pool: The Return of the Aqua Eye

Teal eyeshadow has been popping up on celebrity lids lately, so I'm wondering if the International Makeup Artist High Council is trying to tell us something. Is teal (or aqua, if you prefer) shadow ready to make a comeback?

Kate Bosworth rocked a flat teal lid at the Costume Institute Gala, and Gwyneth Paltrow sports a dewy aqua eye on the cover of V magazine. The look is definitely out there, but I think what makes it work is that the rest of the face is neutral and downplayed. Both Kate and Gwyneth wear just a hint of natural blush, and a pale neutral lip color with no shimmer.

I certainly wouldn't wear this look to the office, but done right, it could be fun for a night out. If you're looking to recreate it for yourself, here are a few of my favorite picks.

For Kate's look, choose a powder shadow - nothing beats the famed MAC Parrot, which disappeared from shelves and then was reincarnated as part of the Originals collection. While you're at it, check out Electric Eel and Aquadisiac as well.

For a dewy eye like Gwyneth's, Shiseido Hydro Powder eyeshadows are an excellent bet - and a perennial favorite here at Beauty Addict. I love these for their gel-to-powder texture, easy blending, and great "buildability." Layer sheer aqua Languid Lagoon with brighter, punchier Aqua Shimmer.

And for just a hint of teal at the lashline, try NARS Eye Pencil in Kaliste (dark teal). This one is VERY wearable and looks gorgeous as a color accent on the lower lashline. Pair it with a regular smokey eye up top, or just a swipe of black liquid liner - see this photo from a 2006 Nina Ricci show for inspiration.

What do you think? Tell me...
