My relationship with Dolce & Gabbana The One started in a duty-free shop in the Frankfurt airport a couple of years ago, when I was still traveling frequently to Germany for work (thanks to our wonderful economy and the not-so-mighty dollar, that is no longer happening).

Every time I passed through an airport I spritzed The One on my wrist (and usually, Prada Infusion d'Iris on the other wrist). I remember the train of thought very well, and it went something like this:

The first spritz: Blech, fruit.

Waiting in the business class lounge: Hmmm, too generic now. Boring.

Boarding: What's that delicious smell? Airports aren't supposed to smell like this.

In my seat: It's me! I'm what smells good!

Duty free cart coming up the aisle: I should buy a bottle of this when they get to me...

But before I knew it, I was either immersed in a book or movie, or asleep from business trip fatigue (and too much wine on the plane). This went on, oh, at least five times, and I never did buy a bottle of The One. When I'd step into Sephora or another duty-free to give it a sniff, I'd only be reminded of the so-so opening of the fragrance, forgetting about how it somehow transforms on my skin into something just so amazingly good.

Kind of like how DKNY Be Delicious smelled so incredible on my friend AM, but like White Rain apple shampoo on me. The One is to me like Be Delicious was to my friend. Skin chemistry is so bizarre.

Even now, though, I still haven't caved on a bottle of The One. The way it smells in the store just isn't enough to make me open my wallet; it's only when I get home that it starts to develop into something so amazingly attractive. And then I regret not coming home with it. It's isn't a love/hate relationship, but a...love/indifference relationship, I suppose.
