Some fragrances just seem to go better with a sweater, don't they? When the temperatures drop and the leaves change, I tend to reach for creamy, spicy scents, many of which have some vanilla in the base. Here, five of my favorite fall comfort scents, straight from my own perfume cabinet. What are your favorite fall fragrances?

1. Serge Lutens Rousse is everything you could ever want in an autumn scent. From last year's review: "Rousse's notes include mandarin, cinnamon, cloves, spices, floral & aromatic notes, fruit, cinnamon wood, precious woods, amber, musk and vanilla. It smells a bit like a pomander, which brings to mind the delicious anticipation of Christmas...But the balance that Rousse achieves is why I think it's the perfect scent for a transitional season; it's not too sweet, not too dry, not overloaded on the woods or the spices, and not too fruity. Know what I mean? Sweet without being foody, dry without smelling like a bonfire."

2. Bond No 9 West Side. Vanilla rose, absolutely delicious. Other notes include peony, amber, sandalwood, and musk. A gorgeous combination of florals, vanilla and spice, West Side makes me feel warm and comfy even on the most drab, muggy, rainy November days.

3. Kenzo Amour is somewhat woody, but softened up by vanilla and "rice steam." Yes, rice steam! An odd note for a fragrance, but I guarantee you'll detect something warm and starchy when you smell it. You know how much I love Kenzo, so it's no surprise that Amour makes my list. It's so comforting, but super feminine at the same time. 4. Marc Jacobs Amber Splash. Oh, the Marc Jacobs splashes, how I love thee! This is the one to try if you're just dipping your toes in the waters of fall fragrances. It's lighter than all the others listed on this page, but still has that slightly spicy, comforting aspect. Last year I called it a "dumbed-down Rousse," but since then, I've really come to appreciate its lighter touch. Notes include crystallized ginger, star anise, cassia bark, amber, lys, tonka bean, cashmere wood and benzoin. (Note: not sure Amber is still in production, but you can easily find it at various e-tailers.)

5. Estee Lauder Sensuous. When this launched last year, I was intrigued simply because it smelled so different from anything Estee Lauder had ever produced. Nearly a year and a half later, I'm still in love with it, and even more so now that it's autumn. Sensuous features warm, creamy woods, with honey and sandalwood in the drydown. Delicious, sexy and feminine.
