Who Can Turn the World On With Her Smile

Mary Tyler Moore - You're Gonna Make it After All!Remember the Mary Tyler Moore Show? And that theme song? "You're gonna make it after all!" I play the theme song in my head when I'm having a bad day and in some silly way, I find it helpful. I feel a lot like Mary sometimes - young, single, career-minded, sometimes smart and sometimes a little ditzy.

I've had stressful moments where the phrase "Oh Mr. Grant!" nearly escaped my lips, and I've had moments of pure joy when I wanted to toss my hat into the air just like our girl in the opening credits. I nearly did it once while crossing the Chicago River on a particularly successful business trip; but then I realized that my hat would probably go straight into the river, being in the Windy City and all.

Mary had such a great look on that show. Classic early 1970s style - lots of volume in the hair, big eyes, and a nude mouth. I like to recreate it on those days when I'm feeling more like Mary Tyler Moore than Carrie Bradshaw. For hair, blow dry with a round brush and work in some Fekkai Instant Volume Spray at the roots, or Full Volume Mousse throughout your hair. Half up half down works well for this style, lest your mane get TOO big. For eyes, MAC Fluidline gel eyeliner in Blacktrack and lots of black mascara (or some Shu Uemura false lashes if you're feeling adventurous) will give you Mary's wide-eyed look. Keep the line thicker at the outer corner of the eye. A neutral lip - try MAC Lipglass in C-Thru or Underage - tops it off. Click here for a great picture of Mary for inspiration.
