Tangerine Dreams

Now that all the shows are behind us, there's actually time to sit back and dissect the trends! One that popped up quite a bit on the New York Spring 2008 runways was, believe it or not, orange. Nanette Lepore (left), Carolina Herrera (center), and Temperley (right) all showed vibrant tangerine lips, and I was shocked to find myself liking the look! Here's the rundown for each:

Nanette Lepore: Polly Osmond for MAC. Morange lipstick mixed with Lip Conditioner.

Carolina Herrera: Diane Kendal for MAC. Layers of orange and red lipstick with a light wash of fuchsia. See more detailed coverage and photos here.

Temperley: Charlotte Tilbury for MAC. Orange lip pencil, Morange lipstick, and Lipmix.

A lip look like this can be rather difficult to pull off in real life without looking clownish, but if you go for a sheer color that's a little less bright, it can definitely work - and look surprisingly current. For me, going straight for the Morange and copying these looks wasn't going to work...to be completely honest with you I just don't have enough guts to pull off that color with confidence!

So, while digging through my makeup bag earlier this week on my way to dinner I spied two alternative colors that I thought would be perfect and decided to give it a go.

I filled in my whole mouth with a very light application of Shiseido Automatic Lip Crayon in LC5, a new product that's absolutely amazing. Then I topped it with a little bit of Estee Lauder High Gloss in Flamingo, just in the center of my lip. On its own, Flamingo is a sheer pink that nearly matches the natural color of my lips with a little peach thrown in, but as a "topcoat" here it really brought the Shiseido shade to life.

I never thought I could wear a color like the tangerine-hued LC5, but I was wrong. Applied with a light hand and mixed with a little gloss, it looked so modern and fresh!

And if you're looking for something that still captures the spirit of the look but is really sheer and shiny, pick up MAC Lipgelee in coral-peach Glosspitality.

Have you ever thought a runway trend couldn't work for you and then been pleasantly surprised with the results?
