What's Your Favorite Way to Shave?

I know it's considered an annoying chore by many, but I LOVE shaving my legs (and, looking through my archives, I've realized that I seem to love posting about it as well). I love the feeling of lathering up my skin with something creamy and fragrant; love the way the razor smooths out any little bumps and dry patches as it does away with the stubble; love the baby-soft feeling of just-shaved, moisturized legs. So I'm always switching up my shaving products, looking for something smoother, creamier, better-smelling, more convenient. I've used just about everything; let's run down a few of the categories here. What's your favorite way to shave?

  • Shave gel. While I used to despise 99% of the products in this category, I have to admit that I've secretly come to love the old-school lathering gel formulas. There's just something about watching that transforming that's, well, fun. In this particular category, Gillette Satin Care Lavender Kiss is a favorite (I've tried Floral Passion, too, and just can't get past its glow-in-the-dark pink hue). The scents seem to have improved in recent years; they're softer and not as in-your-face as the women's shave gels of yesteryear.

  • Shave cream. An alternative to the gels, these are creams straight out of the bottle or jar. My favorite here? eos Shave Cream in Vanilla Bliss. It smells delicious and you can even use it on dry legs in a pinch (um, like when you get dressed for work and realize you've forgotten that critical leg-shaving step in the morning routine). On the high end, there's Whish Shave Crave; I'm a fan of the Almond, but I can't justify the cost when I can get something just as moisturizing and fragrant at Target.

  • Oil. Whether it's a bath oil or one made specifically for shaving, oil is an excellent shaving aid. I tried one from Pacific Shaving Company a few years ago, and was impressed with how smooth the results were - not to mention that the teeny tiny bottle lasted FOREVER. My other favorite here? Longtime readers will know that it's the trusty L'Occitane Amande Shower Oil. If L'Occitane ever stops producing that, I may end up in a catatonic state.

  • Nothing. When I last posted about this topic a couple of years ago, many of you commented that you prefer to just shave with water. Eek! I still can't get past this. If I even encounter a tiny bare spot on my leg when I'm shaving, I cringe. I honestly don't know how you ladies do it!
